REMIX COMPETITION

The quality of past fan-remixes on the site have been high, and a worthy inclusion to my 808 collection. There has not been so many new fanmixes in the last couple of years (excluding the recent New Order re-remixes).

I was wondering if it would be possible to run some sort of remix compitition, with an 808 fan worthy prize to get the musical juices flowing. Orbital ran similar compititions in the past years and got some good material back. I have personally tried remixing a few 808 tracks but with no success so far - I have ideas - just lacking musical skill, knowledge,ability etc.

So me, like other fans would greatly appreciate different peoples take on 808 tracks.

Whats the chances of such competition? I would love to hear other mixes of Balboa, Dance Yourself to Death, IYF............... and many many others.

Well the Army Of Me Tribute CD would be a good starting point. Apart from that I shall be uploading bits of Joyrider sometime in the future, which you can all have a go at! However it will be difficult to match that classic Sure Is Pure mix!

I wouldnt mind givin it a go.

What is the best and cheapest (if not free) music package, where I can mix various samples to create a track. I have no need for midi as I am instrumentless. The only software I use at the moment is soundforge, which is good for sample editing but tricky to create tracks on it!

I look forward to any replies.

You cant go wrong with a program called Reason 2.5 by Propellerhead Software (check their website.)
I got mine for £200 from the shop below Virgin Megastore on Oxford street - I think Digital Village (online) do it for £189 or so.
Its basically a virtual rack of drum machines, synthesizers, samplers, effects etc. and comes with a vast library of samples (although you can use many other samples as well.)
You dont need a midi keyboard but most people probably use one with it (I dont - too tight to buy one.)
It is VERY simple to use but can also become as complex as you want.
Its surprising what is achievable with it bearing in mind how cheap it is.
(The Prodigy wrote his new album on it.)
You can also get another program from them called Rebirth which is basically two Roland 303s, one 808 and one 909 (virtual obviously) which will give you that lovely acid sound and beats etc.
Thats about £90 - £100.

Cheers for that. I cant spare a couple hundred at the moment - but my mate has got rebirth and didnt do much with it - might borrow that.

Can you incorperate large chunks of samples? (sampled segments of tracks?

unfortunately reason does not allow you to use your own audio samples, everything has to be generated from within the software itself or taken from one of the sound libraries.

if you want to do loop-based stuff on a budget you could go for cakewalk home studio 2004 XL, digital village do it for £100.. have a look at http://www.dv247.com/invt/18490

of course, there's always the joys of limewire..

I suppose all this might be a good enough reason for me to finally upgrade to SX3 unless anyone has heard of a crossgrade to Logic 7.
I know SX1 was the first incarnation, but I'm starting to get a little fed up with Cubase.

What is Graham currently using on his powerbook?

Im sure Reason does allow you to use your own audio samples...

I tried to do a remix of Cobra Bora using Reason.

Its only when you try to replicate it you realise just how amazing the programming really is...

Same goes for all the 90 stuff.
