808 STATE REGROUP
Article: News
"It has been revealed that 808 State will be one of the acts playing at the Manchester Versus Cancer event on 28th January 2006. This marks a return to action for the group, signalling the first time that the band has played together in eight years.
808 State were one of the UK's most renowned acid house acts of the early 90s. The group, consisting of Martin Price (owner of the city's influential Eastern Bloc record shop) Graham Massey and Gerald Simpson, broke into the scene with the track Newbuild in 1988. Simpson subsequently left to form his own A Guy Called Gerald act, succesful in it's own right, and was replaced by Darren Partington and Andrew Barker, and very quickly the track Quadrastate was released. The track Pacific State saw the act really break into the scene however, the release becoming an underground hit before crashing into the UK Top 10 at the end of 1989.
Further UK hits followed with Cubik/Olympic (which reached No 10 in the UK charts in 1990) and In Yer Face which reached one spot higher a year later. 808 State also turned in an album in 1993 called Gorgeous, and released the album 808:88:98 - 10 Years Of 808 State in 1998. The group toured extensively, particularly in America and all over Europe.
On the decision the regroup, the act's Graham Massey said: "It didn't take too much thinking for 808 State to get back together for this event...we are lucky its in our back yard so to speak and so we can't take it for granted".
Also on the Manchester Versus Cancer bill are New Order, Doves, Badly Drawn Boy and The Smiths' Andy Rourke. It promises to be a exciting event that is expected to raise thousands for the cause.
